Equipment

  • large non-stick skillet
  • medium shallow bowl
  • whisk
  • fork
  • Cooking spray
  • spatula

Ingredients

  • 2 slices bread challah, brioche, cinnamon raisin, wheat, white bread, etc.
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ cup milk
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla
  • ½ teaspoon maple syrup or white sugar or brown sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
  • pinch table salt

Instructions

  • Heat large non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat. While pan is heating up, crack an egg into a shallow bowl, add ¼ cup milk, ½ teaspoon vanilla extract, ½ teaspoon maple syrup, ¼ teaspoon cinnamon, and a pinch of table salt to egg.
  • Whisk until incorporated.
  • Dip both slices of bread in egg mixture, cover one side, then flip quickly. Let sit in egg mixture for 15-30 seconds on the second side. This will help you not get dry spots.
  • Spray pan with cooking spray, or add butter. Wipe excess egg off of bread slices on the edge of bowl. Transfer to hot skillet. Cook 3-4 minutes on each side. Cook until golden brown on both sides.
  • Enjoy immediately. Top with butter, maple syrup, and other toppings such as berries, chopped nuts, chocolate chips, and/or whipped cream.

Notes

  • Brioche and challah bread are best, but you can use whatever kind of bread that you have.
  • If using thick sliced bread, add double the milk mixture. If you like very flavorful french toast, you can double the vanilla, maple syrup, and even the cinnamon too.
  • I like using maple syrup to sweeten the custard, it adds a nice extra maple flavor. But you can use regular white sugar or brown sugar. It's not a strong flavor, so any work.
  • Double or triple the recipe for a crowd.
  • Topping ideas: butter, maple syrup, fresh fruit, chocolate chips, powdered sugar, sprinkles, whipped cream, etc.
