How will this easy french toast make your life easier?

This french toast for one recipe is a great weekend breakfast that's so easy and also very delicious. It's something to really get you excited to get up and going in the morning, especially since it just takes about 15 minutes to prepare.

What makes this french toast recipe for one good?

How to make french toast for one person?

hand whisking cinnamon and egg mixture in bowl

To start making your french toast for one, heat a large non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat. Crack one egg into a wide bowl, add milk, vanilla extract, maple syrup, cinnamon, and salt too. Whisk together until smooth.

bread slice soaking in cinnamon milk mixture

Dip both slices of bread into egg mixture. Flip or press down to full cover bread slices, then leave each slice of bread in mixture for 15-30 seconds to soak up lots of the custard. Tap bread on edge of bowl to remove excess custard.

two slices of bread in a pan

Spray skillet with cooking spray. Transfer bread slices from custard to hot skillet.

Cook about 3-4 minutes per side, until each is golden brown.

    pouring syrup onto french toast

Top your french toast for one with butter, maple syrup, and additional toppings like powdered sugar, ground cinnamon, fresh berries or fruit, chopped nuts, whipped cream, etc for a delicious breakfast.

    Substitutions/Tips

    • Thick slices of challah bread or brioche are usually best to make french toast for one because they're sweet. But you can use whatever bread that you have. Slightly dried out bread is usually best.
    • If using thick sliced bread, add double the milk mixture. If you want it very flavorful, you can double the vanilla, maple syrup, and even the cinnamon too.
    • You can substitute the maple syrup for brown sugar or white sugar, since there's such a small amount in this recipe it's a subtle flavor, so use what you have/want.
    • Other great toppings: maple syrup, butter, berries like blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, other fruits, chopped nuts, chocolate chips, etc.

    FAQ

What is the most common mistake in making french toast?

The mistake I kept making until recently was not soaking my bread long enough. Soaking it in the custard mixture makes it tender, moist, and flavorful. I dip one side in, then quickly flip to the second side and let it sit 30 seconds.

What's the trick to making good french toast?

Soak the bread long enough, use a hot pan to get a nice crust, and add enough flavor to the custard dip. These are 3 tips to make your french toast really delicious.

What can I make with leftover ingredients?

    • Bread: Apple Pecan Chicken Salad, serve toasted with Delicata Squash Soup or Instant Pot Mushroom Chicken Soup.
    • Egg: Brownie for One, Baked Oats for One, or Apple Omelet with Sharp Cheddar Cheese.
    • Milk: Butterscotch Milkshake, Strawberry Banana Smoothie, or Creamy Mushroom Chicken with Rice.
    • Maple Syrup: Bananas Foster Pancakes, Apple Pie Overnight Oats, or Dark Chocolate Waffles.

    Equipment

    • large non-stick skillet
    • medium shallow bowl
    • whisk
    • fork
    • Cooking spray
    • spatula

    Ingredients

    • 2 slices bread challah, brioche, cinnamon raisin, wheat, white bread, etc.
    • 1 egg
    • ¼ cup milk
    • ½ teaspoon vanilla
    • ½ teaspoon maple syrup or white sugar or brown sugar
    • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
    • pinch table salt

    Instructions

    • Heat large non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat. While pan is heating up, crack an egg into a shallow bowl, add ¼ cup milk, ½ teaspoon vanilla extract, ½ teaspoon maple syrup, ¼ teaspoon cinnamon, and a pinch of table salt to egg.
    • Whisk until incorporated.
    • Dip both slices of bread in egg mixture, cover one side, then flip quickly. Let sit in egg mixture for 15-30 seconds on the second side. This will help you not get dry spots.
    • Spray pan with cooking spray, or add butter. Wipe excess egg off of bread slices on the edge of bowl. Transfer to hot skillet. Cook 3-4 minutes on each side. Cook until golden brown on both sides.
    • Enjoy immediately. Top with butter, maple syrup, and other toppings such as berries, chopped nuts, chocolate chips, and/or whipped cream.

    FRENCH TOAST FOR ONE

    Notes

    • Brioche and challah bread are best, but you can use whatever kind of bread that you have.
    • If using thick sliced bread, add double the milk mixture. If you like very flavorful french toast, you can double the vanilla, maple syrup, and even the cinnamon too.
    • I like using maple syrup to sweeten the custard, it adds a nice extra maple flavor. But you can use regular white sugar or brown sugar. It's not a strong flavor, so any work.
    • Double or triple the recipe for a crowd.
    • Topping ideas: butter, maple syrup, fresh fruit, chocolate chips, powdered sugar, sprinkles, whipped cream, etc.
