Make one easy chicken bacon ranch sandwich with leftover chicken (or freshly cooked) in about 15 minutes. Tender chicken, crispy and salty bacon, herby ranch, and gooey cheese make for the perfect filling in this sandwich.

hand touching stacked chicken bacon ranch sandwich with tomato

This easy chicken bacon ranch sandwich is crispy, gooey, salty, and so flavorful. It's definitely something to look forward to and enjoy. It's a nice leveled up grilled cheese. So is this Brisket Grilled Cheese.

It's a great recipe to use up that last slice (or couple) of bacon. It's great with buttered bread or dipped in leftover bacon grease. Also, you can use freshly cooked chicken, rotisserie, or leftover chicken. Whatever you have!

There are so many adaptations to make this sandwich delicious, and use what you already have on hand. Or turn it into Chicken Bacon Ranch Flatbread.

    Ingredients

Scroll down to the chicken bacon ranch sandwich recipe card for the amounts of each ingredient, but here's a quick visual + description of what's in it.

chicken bacon ranch sandwich ingredients, with labels
    • Bacon: I like to cut my slice of bacon in ½, widthwise. It fits well on the sandwich.
    • Cheese: Cheddar cheese, mozzarella cheese, monterey jack, or cream cheese. Use one or a mixture. Cheddar is most flavorful, shredded melt more evenly. You can also use American cheese for peak grilled cheese flavor.
    • Chicken: I poached a chicken breast and sliced it for this sandwich. But you can use any leftover chicken too: shredded, rotisserie, lunchmeat, slow cooker chicken, etc.
    • Ranch: My favorite is making my own with Hidden Valley ranch powder. It's a great dressing option when you're cooking for one, and the tastiest version (in my mind)
    • Bread: I sliced some french bread, but use whatever you have/prefer.
    • Butter: You can use some softened butter or the leftover bacon grease from cooking the bacon. Either way!
    • Optional Toppings: I added some fresh garden tomatoes from my kind neighbor and lettuce. Onions or green onions would be great too. or enjoy without additional toppings.

    Instructions

Scroll down to the chicken bacon ranch sandwich recipe card for more detailed instructions. Here's a quick overview + photos to see how to make this recipe in general.

slice of bread with cheese, chicken, and ranch on a blue plate

    1. Cook bacon.

    2. While bacon is cooking, assemble your chicken bacon ranch sandwich. Top one slice of bread with about ⅔ of the cheese, chicken, and ranch dressing.

    3. When bacon is done cooking, add it to sandwich, top with remaining cheese.

    5. Place chicken bacon ranch sandwich in pan, buttered side down, over medium-low heat. Spread remaining butter on top slice. Cook on each side until desired doneness. It might take up to 10 minutes.

    6. Add additional desired toppings, slice in half. Enjoy your chicken bacon ranch sandwich immediately. Serve it with raw vegetables and ranch, grapes, or chips. Or whatever else you like.

    Storage/Reheating Tips

This chicken bacon ranch sandwich is best fresh, but you can save remaining ingredients in individual air tight containers in the fridge and use in another sandwich or even a salad.

If you have leftover sandwich, store in airtight container, microwave or pan fry until warmed. It can be stored in the fridge for about a week, or until it starts to smell off.

    Substitutions/Tips

    • You don't have to grill your chicken bacon ranch sandwich, but I highly recommend it. If eating it uncooked, use sliced cheese instead of shredded.
    • I recommend slicing your bacon slice in half, widthwise to cook all the edges and fit on the bread.
    • Use bacon bits or crumbles if you have them, don't have as much time, or want to.
    • Use leftover bacon grease from cooking the bacon instead of butter. I would just press each slice of bread into the grease, on the pan and swirl it to get fully covered.
    • I wouldn't recommend cooking it in an air fryer. I find the bread to be too crunchy, all the way through. It might dry out in an air fryer. You can try cooking your chicken bacon ranch sandwich but it will be very crunchy.
    • Cook both bacon and chicken bacon ranch sandwich over medium-low heat. The bacon will cook more evenly (and spatter less). And the cheese will melt. Watch this What's Eating Dan video for more info. It'll be worth it (both).
    • Just add about 1 Tablespoon of ranch to your sandwich so it doesn't spill and burn while cooking. If you want more, dip your sandwich into it.
    • Other great add-ins: lettuce, tomato, onion, jalapenos, etc are all great toppings for your chicken bacon ranch sandwich.

    • Chicken Salad with Cranberries and Walnuts (enjoy it as a sandwich!)
    • Also, this Meatloaf for One is great in sandwich form.

    Repurpose ingredients

Use any leftover chicken, bacon, ranch, etc in a wrap, on a salad, or on pasta. There are lots of tasty ways to turn your chicken bacon ranch sandwich into something else.

What to do with leftover ingredients

When you're cooking for one, you often have leftover produce, cans of whatever ingredient, etc. Here are a couple ideas on how to use up the leftover ingredients. It'll help you save money by wasting fewer ingredients.

    • Bread: Add some bread to these Italian Beans for One, Microwave Egg in a Cup, Cheesy White Bean Bake, or Spinach Salad with Mandarin Oranges.
    • Chicken: Chicken Soup for One, Mediterranean Grain Bowl, Baked Panko Chicken for One.
    • Bacon: Chicken Bacon Sheetpan Dinner, Chicken Bacon and Mushroom Pasta.
    • Ranch: turn it into Semi Homemade BBQ Ranch Dressing, Baked Panko Chicken, it's also tasty added to this Vegetarian Burrito Bowl.
    • Cheese: Buffalo Chicken Flatbread, Easy Queso Sauce, Flat Iron Steak Fajitas, or Chili without Tomatoes.

    • cutting board
    • tongs

    Ingredients

    Sandwich

    • 1 slice bacon cut in half, widthwise
    • 2 slices bread
    • 2-3 Tablespoons shredded cheese cheddar cheese, mozzarella, monterey jack, etc (use one kind or a mixture)
    • 2-4 ounces precooked chicken breast sliced or shredded
    • 1-2 Tablespoons ranch dressing
    • 1-2 Tablespoons butter or leftover bacon grease

    Optional Toppings

    • lettuce
    • tomato slices
    • red onion slices

    Instructions

    • Cook one slice of bacon to desired doneness. Set aside.
    • While bacon is cooking, sprinkle about ⅔ of 2-3 Tablespoons shredded cheese (cheddar cheese, mozzarella, monterey jack, etc) on one slice of bread.
    • Add even layer of chicken (about 2-4 ounces) onto cheese. Drizzle 1 Tablespoon of ranch dressing over chicken. Place cooked bacon on top, once it's done).

    Notes

    • Cook both bacon and chicken bacon ranch sandwich over medium-low heat. The bacon will cook more evenly (and spatter less). And the cheese will melt. Watch this What's Eating Dan video for more info. It'll be worth it (both).
    • Use whatever kind of bread that you like best
    • Shredded cheese will melt easiest, but use sliced if needed.
    • Cheddar cheese, monterey jack, mozzarella or a mixture of any of these will be good. You can also use American cheese.
    • You can use leftover bacon grease on sides of bread instead of butter. Place both slices in grease (in the pan) and swirl to cover each slice. You can carefully do this after assembling your sandwich. Place the top slice on after)
    • Add any desired toppings, if any. I liked lettuce and tomato, but you can add onions or other toppings.
